Next we travel to Siena, one of Italy’s best preserved medieval towns which is built on three hills and encircled by almost intact city walls. It is filled with fine examples of Gothic architecture and boasts one of the world’s most unique town squares, the lovely shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. With its narrow streets, alleys and palazzi constructed with rose coloured bricks, Siena is an ideal place to discover a typical Tuscan town.

To make the most of your visit why not join our optional guided walking tour? The walking tour starts in the upper part of the town (Parte de Sopra), home to the Church of Saint Claire, which dominates the Piazza with its pink and white striped façade. Saint Claire was a loyal follower and friend of Saint Francis and the church was dedicated to her shortly after her death in 1253. We continue to Piazza del Comune and then walk through the typical medieval streets to the Lower part of the town (Parte de Sotto) to the magnificent Basilica of Saint Francis. Later we take a scenic drive through the Umbrian countryside to beautiful Lake Trasimeno, the largest Italian lake south of the River Po.

We then continue to the Renaissance town of Pienza, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Really enjoyed the holiday which was full on every day. Really needed a half day’s break just to relax around the pool or go for a walk. Good hotel with friendly staff. Would go again.

Itinerary was very good & there were some lovely trips to some really beautiful places. Mix of ages & abilities on our coach but everyone was helped to do as much or as little as they wanted. Hotel was very pleasant as were the staff. Evening food was ok, some nights menu was better than others. Breakfast was good, enough choice for me. Drivers good. Got us around safely but not big on relaying any useful info on places visited. Guides used were excellent. Made some lovely new friends on this trip & it certainly made the time away that much more enjoyable. It’s a long drive to Italy but it wasn’t too bad with plenty of rest breaks, etc & the scenery is beautiful along the way. There were some who moaned the whole trip about virtually everything but isn’t there always !! Overall, I would recommend this trip.

The tour itself was pretty good but there were some hiccups. Personally I found the drivers very good and helpful. The group - 53 - was large and some people were very needy. One person even had a shopping walker which held up the walking tours and I would have said spoilt the experience for those who helped her. Stupidly I didn't realise it was a singles group -. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful but the food was not '4 star'.No fresh fruit or vegetables. A very limited salad which always arrived late. It did not seem possible to request the vegetarian option if one didn't like the dish on offer. I was extremely surprised to see the same rather tasteless cheese slices (not a piece of cheese) at the breakfast buffet every morning. Perhaps supplies were difficult. No useful shops nearby. Perhaps they closed during Covid. The coach was most uncomfortable - extremely hard seats and the seats that I and a person, also called Christine, from Yorkshire were allocated right by the stair to the side entry should not have been seats - absolutely no room for legs when sitting let alone at night when trying to sleep.
