The Great Meteoron Monastery
The oldest, largest and most visited of all the Meteora monasteries, the Great Meteoron was founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite. The architecture in the main church is as spectacular as the views from the monastery, and you can learn more about the monastery’s history in the on-site museum.
Monastery of Varlaám
Founded in the mid-14th century by a monk of the same name, Varlaam is Meteora’s second biggest monastery. Following his death the monastery nearly turned to ruins, but two brothers from Ioannina revived it in the early 16th century. Inside you’ll find an important collection of relics, art and manuscripts.
Kalambaka
Situated on the foothills of extraordinary Meteora, Kalambaka is a convenient base from which to explore the monasteries. Enjoy a selection of quaint cafés, traditional tavernas and charming bars.
Archaeological Museum of Delphi
One of the most important museums in Greece, the Archaeological Museum of Delphi displays a fascinating collection of finds from the Delphi archaeological site. Exhibits are displayed in chronological order, and you can view everything from coins and jewellery to votive offerings and statues.
Sanctuary of Apollo
The Sanctuary of Apollo is where pilgrims would visit to hear prophecies from Apollo, voiced through his chosen oracle. The path that leads to the Temple of Apollo was once lined by treasuries and statues, but most now lie in ruins.
Treasury of the Athenians
Built in the style of a Doric temple, the Treasury of the Athenians was originally used to safeguard loot from wars and house offerings to Apollo. It is decorated with a fine frieze; however the original copy is located in the Archaeological Museum of Delphi.
Acropolis
As the most striking and complete ancient Greek monument in the world, few sights compare to the Acropolis. It was the former centre of the city, acting as a citadel in its protected hilltop position. The most iconic building here is the Parthenon, with its rows of Doric columns and spectacular sculptural details, and other highlights include the Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheon.
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Located in Syntagma Square, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most important war memorials in Greece. Depicting a fallen soldier, this monument commemorates every soldier who has died fighting for Greece. The Evzones – a historically elite fighting force – guard the tomb, rotating personnel every hour.
Plaka
The perfect place for a taste of quintessential Greece, Plaka offers picturesque scenery, historic landmarks and traditional restaurants. Soak up the ambience as you wander the narrow streets, visit archaeological sites such as Hadrian’s Library and Roman Agora, or relax in one of the quaint cafés.
Archaeological Museum
Containing masterpieces from the history of the Olympic Games, finds from the excavation of the Sanctuary of Zeus and more, the Archaeological Museum is an iconic museum in Greece. You’ll find many sculptures, bronze objects, various weapons and a large collection of terracotta statues.
Ancient Olympia Complex
As the birthplace of the most famous and important sporting event in the world, Olympia is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Taking place every four years as part of celebrations for Zeus, the games were banned by Emperor Theodosius in 393 AD in order to promote Christianity. Highlights include the Ancient Stadium, the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Hera.
