When it comes to picture-postcard settings, Bavaria is your go to. Awe-inspiring Alps, mysterious forests, chocolate-box towns and mesmerising lakes… if there was ever a time you’d need your camera, it’s in Bavaria.
Still need some convincing? Just think of the sensational cuisine! From schnitzel to sauerkraut, bratwurst to beer, you’re guaranteed to get your fill in Germany!
The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961 and was a physical and ideological barrier between the East and West until it fell in 1989, paving the way for the reunification of Germany a year later.
View TourSoft, salty and downright delicious, you’ll find pretzels at every bakery and street stall. Usually flavoured with salt, seeds or cheese, no country makes these twisted doughy treats quite like Germany!
More than 1,500 different types of sausage are produced in Germany, with one of the most popular being the bratwurst. More recently the currywurst has become a countrywide favourite, and the frankfurter is another classic.
Despite not originating from Germany, sauerkraut is a staple in German cuisine. Translating to ‘sour cabbage’, you’ll likely have this as a side dish and it is often served with bratwurst!
Beer culture is very prominent in Germany – they even have their own beer festival! No visit is complete without sampling the country’s finest tipples, be it Pilsner, Kölsch, Märzen or another frothy beverage.
With so much on offer, you might need some inspiration! We’ve hand-picked a selection of favourite destinations and provided an overview of the very best highlights...
Reichstag
Both an architectural wonder and historical monument, the Reichstag is one of the city’s most significant buildings and the current home of the German parliament. The highlight is undoubtedly the glittering glass dome; you can enjoy panoramic 360° city views whilst the political decisions of tomorrow are being made just beneath your feet!
Berlin Wall
Divided for nearly thirty years, Berlin was a city with a wall running through its very heart. There are many places you can see the remains of the wall, with the East Side Gallery being the longest surviving section. Here, you’ll find more than 100 murals created by artists from over 20 countries – the most famous being the ‘Fraternal Kiss.’
Brandenburg Gate
The first stop for every visitor to Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate is an iconic landmark which offers an insight into the city’s fascinating history. Built in 1791, it was originally a symbol of division during the Cold War, but is now a national monument of peace and unity.
Neuschwanstein Castle
There aren’t many places on Earth that look like they came straight out of a fairy tale, but Neuschwanstein Castle is one of them. Built to be the home of King Ludwig II, this magnificent castle is one of Germany’s most popular attractions and is thought to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.
Munich
The Bavarian capital, Munich, is a city which seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. With everything from edgy art galleries and high-street shops to world-class museums and royal palaces, you won’t be short of things to see and do in the ‘city of art and beer'.
Rhine Gorge
The UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge is the most scenic section of the Rhine Valley, with medieval castles, picturesque villages and vine-clad slopes in all directions. Be sure to enjoy the breathtaking views from the summit of Loreley Rock – a huge rock formation that rises to an impressive 200 metres.
Koblenz
Straddling the banks of the mighty Rhine and Moselle rivers, Koblenz is a truly beautiful city. One of the city’s most famous locations is the Deutsches Eck, a bow-shaped platform marking the meeting point of the rivers – the perfect background for your holiday photos!
Rüdesheim
One of the most beautiful ‘wine towns’ in Germany, Rüdesheim is the ideal place to watch the world go by. At the heart of the old town is Drosselgasse, a small historic alleyway lined with taverns and restaurants; with its olde world architecture and Rhineland music, you’re guaranteed an authentic German experience here!
Cologne Cathedral
The defining symbol of Cologne’s skyline, the Cathedral is the most visited attraction in Germany. With impressive Gothic architecture, the shrine of the Three Wise Men and magnificent stained-glass windows, it truly is a sight to behold.
Old Town
Located on the banks of the Rhine, the Old Town is quintessentially German. Expect rustic narrow alleyways lined with traditional houses, bustling breweries and attractions such as the Romanesque Great St. Martin Church.
Museums
With so many remarkable museums to visit, we couldn’t recommended just one! Art lovers will want to head to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum and the Ludwig Museum, whilst the NS Documentation Centre and Cologne City Museum are perfect for those interested in history.
