Enjoy an included full day in Rome. See pretty Piazza Navona, with its three fountains: Fontana del Moro, Fontana di Nettuno, and Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers). The Fountain of the Four Rivers was designed by famous Italian Sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and built in 1651 for Pope Innocent X. Our optional walking tour is a fantastic way to introduce you to the city’s array of spectacular sights. We see the beautiful Piazza Venezia, the central hub of Rome in which many thoroughfares intersect. The imposing Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy, dominates the piazza. The Viale di Fori Imperiali starts here, a main thoroughfare, which leads past the Roman Forum and Trajan’s Forum. Although Rome is a relatively compact city, we would remind you that this is a walking tour, not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties and we would recommend you wear suitable shoes for the day.

Enjoy a free day in resort, or join our optional excursion on the breathtaking Amalfi Drive, possibly the most spectacular road in Europe. The winding cliff top road offers breath-taking panoramic views at every bend. We pause above the beautiful town of Positano, before continuing on to Amalfi, which gives its name to the whole coast on which it lies. Amalfi was once a prosperous Marine Republic, powerful and prosperous and is now a thriving holiday resort. The unmistakable cluster of white tightly packed houses rising up the hillside is dominated by the beautiful Cathedral, which stands superbly on the top of a great flight of steps leading up from the main square. Housed in the magnificent Cathedral are the remains of the Patron Saint of Amalfi and also Scotland – Saint Andrew. Here you will have time at leisure to explore the largest and most popular town of this coast; boasting medieval architecture and colourful façades. Take the opportunity to enjoy this splendid jewel on the peninsula. From Amalfi we travel to Ravello, which nestles in the hillside and is considered by many to give the best views of the area. Here you can visit villa Rufolo (at extra cost – approximately € 7 per person), which gave the musician Richard Wagner the inspiration to create one of his most famous operas, Parsifal. Situated on a ledge over Amalfi, Ravello has been the inspiration for artists and gardeners for many years.

We leave Sorrento and head to Pompeii. Accompanied by a guide, discover the history and life of the great Roman city of Pompeii, buried in the eruption of 79AD. In 79AD the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the town of Pompeii in about 6/7 metres of stones and ash. Painstaking excavations, which are still ongoing, began in the 18th century and have uncovered a remarkable hidden city. Accompany your expert guide around the town, walking along roads with indents from the passing of chariot wheels and discovering the remains of homes, shops and public baths (entrance to the ruins is included). We continue to the attractive, historic hill-town of Frascati. It is a small, relaxed town with a slower pace of life, cleaner air and a far more casual feel than the nearby capital. Frascati is famous for its villas, in particular Villa Aldobrandini, which dominates the town. Frascati is also famous for its production of white wine. After free time we continue to our overnight hotel in the Rome area.
