Why not enjoy a stroll along the ‘Cours Mirabeau’ a pleasant road with lots of greenery and fountains, where rich families and nobles built elegant homes to celebrate their success; or visit the cathedral of Saint Sauveur. Today’s full day optional excursion takes us first to the famous ‘Pont du Gard’, an ancient Roman aqueduct originally used to carry spring water over 50 kilometres to the city of Nïmes, before continuing to the historic walled city of Avignon. After free time, we visit the famous ‘Pont St Bénézet’ (broken bridge). Dating from the 12th century, the bridge is said to have been built by Bénézet, a young shepherd whose visions commanded him to construct a bridge across the Rhône. We later continue to the impressive 14th century ‘Palais des Papes’ (Popes Palace). Constructed in the 14th century and dominating Avignon’s skyline, the ‘Palais des Papes’ is the result of two palaces being joined. The Old Palace (North and East) was constructed by Pope Benedict XII, and the New Palace (South and West), by his successor Clement VI.
