In 1936 work started at the small fishing village of Peenemünde. By 1938 a vast research facility, rocket factory and airfield was under construction. Five thousand people would work at Peenemünde, including the brilliant scientist and engineer, Dr Werner von Braun. At this site V2 rockets were developed and test launched. Although not developed here, the V1 ‘Doodle Bug’ was test fired from the airfield area. Hitler came to rely on the success of these ‘Vengeance’ weapons. In the end Von Braun’s genius contributed more to space travel than winning the war. The significance of Peenemünde was unknown to the Allies until a Spitfire reconnaissance mission brought back evidence of rocket and launch facilities. The raid of August 17-18, 1943 destroyed much of the site and the Germans moved production. Join us on this fascinating tour which also takes in the island of Rügen and ‘Colossus of Prora’, Adolf Hitler’s ‘Strength through Joy’ holiday hotel and the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp for women.
