This morning, you have the opportunity to join us on an optional excursion to Monaco. The Principality of Monaco’s eight square miles form the second smallest, but almost certainly wealthiest, sovereign city-state in the world; with 30% of the population being millionaires.

Nicknamed 'The Rock', this tiny capital is built against the mountains and sprawls down to the glittering shores of the French Riviera. Spend time in Monte Carlo, rub shoulders with the rich and famous and, if you're feeling lucky, take your chances in the famous Grand Casino where the lavish interiors are still decorated in the Belle Époque style.

I enjoyed the trip, there were however 2 very long days travelling and this might not suit some people. I would recommend upgrading to seating to see the carnivals. I think that has to be done at the time of booking. I chose to stand but to get a good spot this involved queuing and standing for many hours. I preferred the day in Menton for the Lemon Festival. I thought the carnival was much better than the one in Nice, the crowd was much more relaxed and I loved the whole day there. I was not however very pleased with the hotel where we stayed in the area. It was across the boarder in Italy. The location was very poor and the food at the hotel was not at all up to the usual Ledger standard. The breakfasts consisted of tinned fruit cocktail, tinned pineapple rings, hard white rolls, the strawberry yoghurt was made by string strawberry jam into plain yoghurt. There were croissants, sliced cheese, ham and sometimes very salty scrambled eggs that looked more like scrambled omeletts. The usual jams etc were available, tea coffee and cake. The cereals tasted stale. Dinner consisted of a reasonable starter, a quite nice paster or fish dish, but the main course was abysmal. 1 slice of meat or some fish with gravy or sauce and one overcooked vegetable that was far too salty. There were no options for desert, a piece of gateaux or something similar was just put in front of you. More hard white rolls, no butter at dinner time! Water, tea and coffee had to be purchased. The hotel rooms were OK though. This holiday would be much improved if a different hotel was used.

Excellent holiday. The only downside was that the food in the hotel was a bit mediocre
