Local departure by coach, then to Compiegne, north of Paris, for a three-night stay.

We begin at the Musee de la Grande Guerre at Meaux; a massive new museum about the First World War and the fighting on the Marne. We have the whole morning here to do justice to this superb collection of material. After lunch in Meaux, we travel up the Marne valley and look at the role of the British Expeditionary Force on the Marne in 1914, seeing the La Ferte Sous Jouarre Memorial, the Royal Engineers memorial and British graves at Montreuil. At Chateau- Thierry we look at the role of American troops here in 1918 seeing the impressive US Memorial and at Belleau Wood we see where the US Marine Corps fought, seeing their memorial and also the impressive American War Cemetery.

Includes Breakfast

Today we look at the fighting near Compiegne during WW1 and then visit the Armistice Carriage Museum in the Compiegne Forest. Here the Armistice was signed and a generation later Hitler inflicted humiliation on a defeated France. We then visit the Guards’ grave at Villers-Cotterets where British Guardsmen fought during the Retreat From Mons. After lunch in Soissons we visit the Soissons Memorial, which commemorates British soldiers who died on the Marne in 1918. We then visit a mixed British and German cemetery from the 1918 battles, and finish at the impressive Phantoms Memorial. These giant figures designed by Paul Landowski look out across the fields of conflict of the valley of the Marne: a fitting place to end the tour.
