After breakfast, we set off towards the Peak District for a scenic return journey aboard the Peak Rail. While you admire the rolling landscapes, enjoy a drink with mince pies.
After our return rail journey, we continue to Chatsworth House. A historically rich residence, Chatsworth has been the ancestral home to the Dukes of Devonshire for centuries. Its origins trace back to 1549 when Elizabeth and William Cavendish acquired the land for a sum of £600. This was Elizabeth's home, the Countess of Shrewsbury, better known as Bess of Hardwick. Over her eventful life, she married four times, and in the process, rose to a position of great power and wealth. With her marriage to William Cavendish, Treasurer of the King’s Chamber, they established Chatsworth as their home and had eight children. A later marriage to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, saw Bess become Countess of Shrewsbury. Over the following generations, the house was transformed into what we see today.
On arrival, take your time to delve into its magnificent architecture and history before heading to the 105-acre garden to experience the light trail. Chatsworth House always dazzles visitors with its festive displays with beautifully decorated rooms, each one a sight to behold – you can truly feel the magic of Christmas at Chatsworth!
