Originally settled by the Norsemen in the 9th century, Lerwick was founded as an unofficial marketplace to service 17th century Dutch herring fleets. The core of the town is a maze of narrow, flagstone streets set behind 18th century sandstone buildings overlooking the busy harbour. Hay’s Dock, once the centre of Shetland’s fishing and boat building industries, is home to the marvellous Shetland Museum and Archives. On the southern tip of the mainland, the extraordinary archaeological site of Jarlshof tells the story of some 4,000 years of human history on this remote archipelago with a wealth of wildlife.

Arrive 8:30am. Depart 4:00pm. Kollafjørdur is a small fishing port on the Faroe Islands of Streymoy. Initially, there were just a few dwellings adjoining the village church which, dating from 1837, is a typical black-tarred wooden building with white painted windows and a turf roof. Today, although it is home to less than a thousand people, the village stretches over four miles along the northern shore of the Kollafjørdur Fjord. From the port of Kollafjørdur, join an optional excursion to visit the island communities that live on this isolated archipelago where the landscape is both wild and dramatic.

The capital of the amazing Orkney archipelago, the Royal Burgh of Kirkwall sits almost exactly in the centre of the mainland, dividing the island into east and west. The magnificent red brick St. Magnus Cathedral, a legacy of the town’s rich Viking heritage, dominates Kirkwall’s skyline. Explore these beautiful islands on an optional excursion, where history can be traced back 6,000 years through Neolithic standing stones and the magnificent archaeological site of Skara Brae. Modern day Orkney is a hive of creative activity and its craft workshops are perfect for a special souvenir.

Situated on the shores of the deep Cromarty Firth and with a fine natural harbour, Invergordon is a key port with an important naval history stretching back through two World Wars. YOUR CABIN
You will stay in comfortable cabin accommodation in either standard or superior cabins, with 70% of cabins on board the Marco Polo cruise ship having an ocean view. All cabins have en suite facilities including shower and WC, T.V., hairdryer, telephone and personal safe.

Restaurants
In the splendid Waldorf Restaurant, you can enjoy a full English breakfast, a leisurely five course lunch and a delicious dinner each day. Breakfasts and lunches are usually served in the restaurant on an open seating basis, whereas in the evening, dinner is on two fixed time sittings.
For a more informal alternative, drop in to Marco’s Restaurant, open each day for buffet style breakfast, lunches and dinner. The Pool Deck is ideal for al fresco meals, so enjoy a buffet breakfast or lunch from Marco’s served up with a fantastic ocean view.
Lounges
Relax and savour the wonderful, sweeping ocean views in the Palm Garden, or in a quiet corner of the lovely Columbus Lounge. At the very heart of the MS Marco Polo is the smart Captain’s Club, a popular place for fellow passengers to meet. Opt for a pre dinner drink here and enjoy a few of your favourite tunes played by our resident pianist. After dinner, head to the comfortable theatre style Marco Polo Lounge where the show team would enjoy the pleasure of your company. Sit back and enjoy as the ship's artists display their talents in an expertly choreographed performance. For evening entertainment and late night dancing, Scotts Bar is an ideal spot. Located on Amundsen Deck, Scotts has direct access to the outside and a view of the pool deck below.
On Deck
Enjoy the outdoor swimming pool and three whirlpools and for a spot of daily exercise or a romantic evening stroll, head to the Amundsen Deck which offers a traditional walk around promenade.

If you’d like to play chess, bridge, backgammon or another activity, just have a word with our librarian. After a brief sign up session, you'll be put in touch with other passengers who share the same interests, allowing you to make the most of your time aboard. It’s never forced – just helpful.
When at sea, you may choose from a make over in the beauty salon, a work out in the gym, a swim in the pool, deck games or to join in a quiz. There’s always something going on.

Guest Speakers
Learn more about a fascinating subject from someone who is passionate about their interest and will want to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with you. Your cruise will be accompanied by two of these experts – Richard Clubley and Gerry Graham – giving informative talks or practical sessions on a range of fascinating subjects. Talks are generally programmed to take place during days spent at sea rather than in port, so that you won’t miss out.
Richard Clubley, Guest Act Speaker
Richard studied biology at Brunel University and then taught in secondary schools, both in London and Sheffield, for 30 years. He started exploring Scottish islands, aged eight, when his parents took him to Arran, and has now visited more than 70, some of them many times. He is a regular contributor to Scottish Islands Explorer magazine and his first book: Scotland's Islands - A Special Kind of Freedom was published by Luath Press, Edinburgh in 2014. He will be spending a lot of time in Orkney this year, working on more articles for the magazine and his second book: Orkney - A Special Place. Some people spend a lifetime in sport, music or stamp collecting – all very worthwhile – but his hobby is Scottish islands. He can't get enough of them. Luckily there are 165 so he is not done yet.
Gerry Graham, Guest Artist
Fast, funny, observant and witty, Gerry has been entertaining audiences worldwide for 40 years, and his ability to connect is as sharp now as it ever was. Born into a showbiz family in South Yorkshire, he first performed on stage at the age of 7, and he was playing guitar in a local skiffle group two years later.
Since turning professional in 1974, he has entertained in jungles, aircraft hangars, been dropped off a helicopter in Northern Ireland to entertain the troops, travelled hundreds of thousands of miles to club and cabaret engagements, and appeared in just about every major theatre in the U.K., including the London Palladium.
He’s worked with some amazing stars such as Johnny Ray, Helen Reddy, and Howard Keel, to name but a few. He’s been a ventriloquists dummy for Ray Alan, praised to the skies by Les Dawson, and sworn at by Sir Laurence Olivier! In 2004, he appeared as Harry Stubbs in the post West End run of Cliff – the musical, touring Denmark and the U.K. to great critical acclaim. Gerry has written scripts for Sooty, produced over 250 pantomimes since 1987, written children's stories and supplied material for many U.K. shows and performers. Gerry is very proud of his relationship with Cruise & Maritime, and is looking forward to revisiting Marco Polo on her 50th year.
An Audience with…
Selected cruises feature a light hearted ‘Audience with …’ where you are invited to listen to an invited performer or guest speaker talk about their expert knowledge and life experience, interspersed with questions from the audience. This offers you a great chance to become involved and be a part of the fun. Our audiences love them – we hope you will too!
A Laugh on the Ocean Waves
On selected cruises, you can enjoy the talents of one of our guest comedians. Laughter is said to be the best medicine, so enjoy the talents of our comedy acts in their dedicated evening shows, hear them talk about their life experiences and listen to their 'Comedy Corner' interviews with the Cruise Director.
Evening Entertainment
After dinner, the show team would enjoy the pleasure of your company in the comfortable Show Lounge, as artists display their talents in a stylish show. The MS Marco Polo's speciality acts and guest entertainers complement the show team to ensure that your evenings go with a swing. For a little night music, there are different combinations around the ship, including classical interludes with our resident pianist and violinist. If, however, you prefer quieter pleasures, how about a few hands of cards or making up a table for a syndicate quiz.
Arts and crafts are growing in popularity, and specialists will be delighted to demonstrate their talents. These may include bead jewellery, millinery, mosaic decoration, calligraphy and decorative card art. You may need to buy materials on board which will be supplied by the crafter for a modest charge.
