Travel to Portsmouth for the overnight 24 hour crossing to Santander. Accommodation is in two-berth inside cabins with en suite facilities.

Following an evening arrival in Santander, travel onwards to your overnight hotel in northern Spain.

Travel to the fortified town of Zamora, which featured in the legend of El Cid. The town boasts many beautifully preserved Romanesque churches and a stunning Byzantine cathedral. Stay for two nights in Salamanca.

Spend the day exploring the beautiful city of Salamanca, with its splendid Roman, Arabic and Christian architectural treasures. Wander the elegant arcades of the Plaza Mayor and see Puente Romano, which spans the River Tormes.

Visit the medieval walled town of Avila, a World Heritage Site, with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture together with Renaissance churches and palaces. Continue to Madrid for a four-night stay.

The capital of Spain is a truly cosmopolitan city with a wealth of cultural attractions. The splendid Plaza Mayor provides the perfect starting point to explore old Madrid, lined with muralled buildings. See the huge Palacio Real, explore the Paseo del Prado of Bourbon Madrid and take a stroll around the magnificent Retiro Park.

Toledo is often regarded as the Spanish city with the greatest wealth of monuments and known as the "city of the three cultures" because Christians, Arabs and Jews have lived there for centuries. Behind its walls, Toledo preserves its artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues.

Spectacularly situated on a high rocky spur, its old quarter and Roman aqueduct are World Heritage Sites. In addition, numerous Romanesque churches, the cathedral and fortress create a magnificent city that presides over this part of Castile.

Leave Madrid and head north to Burgos, situated on the Pilgrims' Road to Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral and old quarter are masterpieces of Spanish Gothic architecture. Continue to the Biarritz area for a two-night stay.

Enjoy your excursion into Basque Spain, visiting the stunning city of San Sebastian, set on a sweeping, shell shaped bay with its charming old quarter and La Belle Epoque style.

Head through France to the pretty resort of La Rochelle for an overnight stay.

Spend the morning exploring the harbour, arcaded streets and half-timbered houses. Early afternoon, travel to northern France for an overnight stay.

Leave your hotel after breakfast and travel to the Channel for your crossing and return to your original joining point.
