The Battle of Loos in 1915 was the first major British offensive of the Great War on the Western Front. Join us on a remarkable tour of this ‘forgotten battlefield’ over the 110th anniversary as we visit key sites such as Hill 70 and the Loos Memorial, attending any local commemorations or having a ceremony of our own.
Please choose your preferred 4 or 5 day itinerary
Local departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then on to our hotel in Belgium for a three-night stay.
We begin on the Loos battlefields of 1915, seeing the site of the Hohenzollern Redoubt where unit after unit fought during WW1. We will see some of the memorials to the men who fought and died here, and walk part of the battlefield.
We then visit Vermelles British Cemetery, where many of the dead from this area are buried, and after lunchtime in Bethune, we explore the area around Hill 70 where the 1915 operations took place and the Canadians fought in 1917.
We then look at the terrible story of the ‘Field of Corpses’ at Loos in 1915, and see the open ground where so many died. At St Mary’s ADS Cemetery, we examine the moving story of Rudyard Kipling’s son, John, who fell here with the Irish Guards.
Includes Breakfast
On the anniversary weekend of the battle, we will attend any local ceremonies or have one of our own at the Dud Corner Cemetery and Loos Memorial. We will then also see the Loos British Cemetery with its new extension, and discover the story of many British and Commonwealth soldiers who have been recovered from the battlefields around Lens in recent times. We take a short battlefield walk out to the ‘Lone Tree’ which was in the heart of the fighting in 1915 and is now a memorial.
After lunch, we will look at the French Offensives of 1915 at Notre Dame de Lorette, seeing the French National Cemetery and the Lens 14-18 Centre, as well as the ‘Ring of Remembrance’, a memorial which commemorates all those soldiers who fell in this wider area of northern France.
