Today is the 80th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden. We will attend any major local ceremonies and visit the Landing and Drop Zones around Arnhem, where the 1st Airborne Division began their operations on this day in 1944. We will spend time at the Hartenstein Hotel, the battle headquarters of the Airborne, and now an important museum explaining the history of what happened here. Later, we visit Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.

Today, we will follow the routes of Airborne forces towards Arnhem and see where German forces blocked their approach to Arnhem Bridge. At the Arnhem Bridge itself, we will look at this key aspect of the battle, walk on and around the area of the bridge, and see the nearby Visitor’s Centre. Later, we will examine the battle of the Oosterbeek Perimeter, seeing the streets where the fighting took place, the White House, Hackett’s Hollow, and the ground where the Border Regiment fought, witnessing a lot of evidence of the fighting from 1944.
Includes Breakfast
This morning, we look at the fighting in the approach to Arnhem where ground units of 30 Corps made their advance and US Airborne forces were in action. We travel to Grave Bridge, where a linkup between American Paratroopers and British soldiers occurred, and then travel across to the important Groesbeek Heights area and visit the Groesbeek Memorial, where the Missing of Arnhem are commemorated. Later, we will visit Nijmegen Bridge, which was captured by 30 Corps and was where American Airborne soldiers crossed the river in assault boats. We then look at the final stages of the battle and the evacuation of Arnhem from the area of the Old Church at Oosterbeek across to Driel on the other side of the Lower Rhine.
