Walking Arnhem

75 years ago, men of the 1st Airborne Division dropped and landed near the Dutch town of Arnhem intent on securing the furthest bridge behind enemy lines in Operation Market Garden. More than 12,000 went in and just over 2,000 came out in what was one of the epic British battles of WW2. Join us on this new tour as we walk the Arnhem/Oosterbeek Battlefield.

Itinerary

Please choose your preferred 5 day itinerary

Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in Holland where we stay for four nights.

Walk 1: Our first walk takes us along the Lion Route, the southernmost route into Arnhem, used by 1st Airborne Division. This was used by Lieutenant Colonel Frost’s 2nd Parachute Battalion, who encountered only mild resistance as they moved on Arnhem Bridge. We literally follow in their footsteps and also see the Railway Bridge, where B Company fought.

Walk 2: After lunch we examine the advance of 156 Parachute Battalion as they attempted to reach the road bridge, seeing where SS troops blocked them, continuing on to the Kavanagh ambush site, the actions of the 7th KOSB and 21st Independent Parachute Company in northern Oosterbeek before ending at Hackett’s Hollow – the last stand of the 4th Parachute Brigade.

Walk 3: In the morning we visit the superb museum in the Hartenstein Hotel and then walk the hotel grounds, examining its role in the perimeter defence. We also see nearby locations such as the site of Corporal Tierney’s foxhole, where his mortar team was filmed in what has become an epic film clip from the battle.

Walk 4: In the afternoon we walk the area around Oosterbeek Church, see Kate ter Horst’s (the Angel of Arnhem) house and then walk north up the Oosterbeek perimeter area to the Tafelberg and ‘MDS Crossroads’ where the Airborne medics treated the wounded.

Walk 5: Our final walk starts at the Pumping Station, where the 10th Parachute Battalion fought, seeing some original trenches from 1944. We then follow the battle in the woods on 19th September 1944 and end up in Wolfheze to see the positions of the Krafft Battalion and the Recce Squadron ambush site.

In the afternoon we see the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, and look at the evacuation across the lower Rhine, taking a foot ferry (weather conditions permitting) to replicate the route used by Canadian assault boats in 1944. We then see the evacuation memorial at Driel and discuss ‘The Island’.
