Umbria Uncovered and Tuscan Delights: Assisi, Perugia, Florence & Siena

Located in the centre of the Italian mainland, Umbria is known as the country’s 'green heart', its undulating landscape peppered with verdant winding valleys, olive groves, vineyards and cypress-dotted hills. Amidst the untouched scenery are beautifully preserved towns and cities, often commanding panoramic positions looking over the beautiful rolling hills. From our base near Perugia, we explore the region’s highlights as well as some of those in neighbouring Tuscany. Visit St. Francis’ birthplace of Assisi, the bustling city of Perugia and central Italy’s largest lake, Lago di Trasimeno. There is the opportunity to taste the local wine too!

Beautiful and characterful hotel in scenic, rural location. Breakfasts and breakfast-room staff delightful and charming but standard of evening meals very variable with increasingly-chaotic service. For example, on our penultimate night with the Leger Holidays group, my husband had to wait 45 minutes for his ham and melon starter whilst another guest at our table waited over one hour for their first course. There was no apology for these delays from the dining-room staff. We wondered if post-pandemic staffing issues were responsible for our problems with the service. That said, most of the hotel's staff in the various departments were welcoming and helpful. In the prevailing 40 degrees C temperatures we loved the outdoor swimming pools, the smaller, shallower one helping me to regain my confidence in the water. But there ought to be handrails by the steps into both pools, particularly for less-mobile guests, although we also noticed some able-bodied people struggling to get in. Service at the Pool Bar was pretty good, especially when Elena was on duty. The views of the rolling, Umbrian countryside and hill towns from the sun-lounging areas are to die for! We may consider returning to this hotel, but whilst we're very appreciative of Leger Holidays for introducing us to it, we'd travel independently by air another time since: 1) independent guests appeared to us to fare much better regarding quality and variety of meals and service in the dining room. 2) As mentioned the long coach journey took it out of us this time, even though the Luxuria coach was beautifully air-conditioned. Given the soaring temperatures we only went on one of the days out Leger included, which left us in a strong position to observe various aspects and features of the hotel during the 5 full days we spent on the premises. Hence our above comments. In the evenings and on the coach, we enjoyed the company of our very friendly fellow-travellers with Leger and the two drivers, Paul and Mario, did a great job.

Admittedly there are some long days, but travelling through different countries, by coach, soaking in the ever changing landscapes is a wonderful experience not to be missed. The hilltop towns of Umbria transport you back to another time, which are steeped in history and atmospheric. Maybe not ideal for people with reduce mobility, as access to majority of centres are either by steep hills or steps, otherwise not to be missed. The hotel, for our holiday stay did not disappoint but it is in a very isolated area, with lovely photo opportunities. This holiday should be on everyone’s bucket list..Italy does not disappoint..

Stop overs in France, both inbound and out, very poor. Driver contacted hotel on outward bound trip to advise them of our arrival time, went to restaurant/bar for evening meal, staff couldn't be bothered to serve or be polite, very disappointing. Final destination hotel in Italy reported to be a 4 star hotel, air conditioning not in use, mini bar empty, no daily drinking water, no tea/coffee facilities, food not up to standard. Only saving grace was the bar/pool area and the views. Daily excursions not planned out properly, knowledgeable guide on coach non existent, 2 proficient drivers only, insufficient time at locations due to available drop off locations meaning long distances and time taken to get to the heart of the towns. On the last return journey of approximately 14 hours, we ended up late at night at a French hotel on an industrial estate without restaurant facilities and were told there was a 24 hour Mcdonalds and a couple of other options!! This wasn't good enough. We will not be considering using Leger Holiday again, nor will we recommend them, all in all, a very poor and disappointing experience.
