Oberammergau Passion Play
5 tours from £1,599pp
Every decade, the tiny German village of Oberammergau plays host to one of the world's most extraordinary theatrical events: the Passion Play. In 2030, it will be staged for the 43rd time.
This sprawling, open-air production dramatises Christ's final days, and the village has kept up the tradition without fail since 1634. It began as a bargain with fate - during an outbreak of the plague, the villagers vowed that if they were spared, they would re-enact the Passion every ten years from then on. Nearly four centuries later, they're still keeping that promise.
Almost 2,000 locals take part as actors, choir members and musicians, with no professionals amongst them. Every person on the stage or in the pit actually lives in the village. Performed entirely in German, the play unfolds over most of a day beneath a roofed stage, with the Alpine peaks framing the scene behind it.
Our itineraries build your trip around a spectacle that only comes around once every ten years...
